Procedures to register a trial bike

The registration of a
trial bike
is one of those dilemmas that always haunts us, whether we are going to buy a new or used motorcycle. Traditionally, there are those who think that it is better to have an unregistered motorcycle, since it is not strictly necessary to make areas or circulate on roads, thus avoiding having to pay annual taxes or ITV.
On the other hand, those who think that a registered motorcycle is always better, since it increases the value of the vehicle and is also a guarantee in case we are stopped by any traffic or environmental authority.
Our particular recommendation is, as far as possible, that the motorcycle is always registered. The annual road tax is on average less than €10, to which we must add, depending on whether the motorcycle is new or used, the first registration or the transfer of owner if we are dealing with the second case.

It is important to know that there is a limited deadline to register a trial bike. In other words, a model manufactured in 2014 with all its documentation cannot be registered as a
new trial bike
in 2017. This has to do with the current legislation in terms of environmental regulations. For example, from 2017 all registered motorcycles will have to pass the Euro 4 standard.

REGISTRATION OF A NEW TRIAL BIKE

If you decide to register your new
trial bike
you have two options: do it directly with the dealership, or on your own.
Normally, dealers do not overuse this concept and it is the simplest alternative. However, if you decide to do the paperwork on your own, you must:
1) Form 576. Registration tax must be paid in www.aeat.es. You must have the purchase invoice and the ITV card in front of you, as you will be asked for data from these documents.
2) City tax. You have to pay the Tax on Mechanical Traction Vehicles to your town hall, for which it is usually enough to present the technical sheet of the motorcycle that you have received at the dealership.
3) Traffic. Here you have to pay the registration fees and it is done at the Provincial Headquarters that corresponds to you. Once the proof of payment has been obtained, the technical sheet, the ITV card must be presented together with the proof of payment of the municipal tax and form 576.
4) Enrolment. You have to order the license plate of your new motorcycle. Remember that trial bikes are approved to have small license plates and that you must be very careful with their placement, avoiding protruding edges, especially if the license plate is made of metal. It is always recommended that the license plate be acrylic.

TRANSFER OF A SECOND-HAND TRIAL BIKE

If we are in the case
of a second-hand trial motorcycle
, the procedures are simpler. First of all, you have to check all the documentation of the motorcycle, which must have its registration certificate, the technical data sheet and, if possible, the ITV in force.
In case we do the entire transfer process through an agency (the fees can be around €50) all the procedures are done in less than 20 minutes and we will leave there with a provisional proof of circulation, valid for 30 days, in our name.
If you decide to do these procedures on your own, check out this article on

REGISTRATION OF A TRIAL BIKE AS HISTORIC

If your intention is to register a classic trial bike and it has never been registered, or it has been definitively deregistered, it is possible to re-register the bike as historic.
The first thing to keep in mind is that for this to happen, the model must meet a series of requirements:
1) A minimum of 25 years from the date of manufacture or, failing that, from the date of its first registration. If neither of the two existed, the date on which that model was discontinued would be used.
2) Be included in the General Inventory of Movable Property of the Spanish Historical Heritage declared as an asset of cultural interest.
3) Be a collector’s vehicle that, due to its uniqueness, scarcity or having done something special, deserves to be covered by the historic vehicle regime.
4) To achieve this distinction, the vehicle will have to pass a series of tests to certify, among other things, the authenticity of its parts and their condition.
Soon we will explain in a new report what are the specific steps that must be followed to register a trial bike as historic.
