Montesa Cota 300RR 2016

Honda’s strong commitment in 2005 to equip only 4-stroke engines in its Montesa Cota contrasts with the evolution of a market that has abandoned valve engines and is firmly committed to 2-stroke engines.
Honda continues to rely heavily on 4-stroke engines. Its impressive results in competition leave no doubt about its performance and superiority, but it was necessary to evolve the production product to win back the fan, responding to two major disadvantages compared to its 2-stroke rivals: less weight and more power.
The first major evolution came in 2014 with an increase in displacement, a reduction in engine braking and the launch of two parallel versions that also allowed Montesa to compete on price with the 2-stroke.
Coinciding with the French GP and under great expectation, Montesa has presented the Montesa Cota 300RR, a model that complements

the two versions of the Cota 4RT 260

and whose focus is more racing compared to its sisters. While we wait to be able to get behind the controls as soon as possible, we will now study in detail what its new features and advantages are through the official press release sent by Honda.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT OF THE MONTESA COTA 300RR LAUNCH

Since its appearance, the Montesa Cota 4RT model created a revolution in the world of trial, a discipline completely dominated by 2-stroke mechanics, engines of relative mechanical simplicity and at the same time extremely compact that, however, penalized by a high level of polluting emissions.
So much so that, anticipating the anti-pollution regulations that were due to come into force in 2006, Montesa, in close collaboration with Honda Motor Co., developed the Montesa Cota 4RT, an advanced trial motorcycle equipped with a compact and revolutionary 4-stroke 4-valve engine powered by PGM-FI electronic fuel injection, being highly efficient in terms of the level of pollutant emissions as well as its significant torque and power values.
Montesa Cota 300RR 2016
Montesa has been inspired by racing to improve its 4TA model, the chassis also proved to be certainly innovative with the adoption of a lightweight aluminium frame and the use of a set of SHOWA suspensions of the highest quality, highlighting the successful design of the rear suspension system. From the outset, the performance of the surprisingly compact 250cc engine amazed to be able to compete head-to-head against the superior 2-stroke machines of similar displacement.
The Montesa Cota 4RT stood out for its exclusivity in terms of technological solutions, but also for being a model of the highest quality and proven reliability, aspects certainly valued by the brand’s customers
In 2014 Montesa presented important modifications with the launch of the Cota 4RT 260, a model that in its 2016 version has undergone a new renovation among which stands out for a notable increase in performance.
But in addition, for this season, Montesa expands its current range with the marketing of a new trial model, the spectacular Montesa Cota 300RR, a motorcycle that stands out for its exquisiteness and exclusivity and that has been developed with a clear racing orientation to satisfy the most demanding followers of the brand.

MOUNTAIN DEVELOPMENT CONCEPT COTA 300RR

Until today, Montesa had two high-quality models in its range, the Cota 4RT260 and the Race Replica, whose main hallmarks are their advanced technology, reliability and quality of components. However, more racing-oriented customers were asking for an increase in engine performance as well as greater lightness to be able to compete head-to-head against 2-stroke machines.
Based on these two premises and maintaining the main hallmarks of the Cota4RT models, the Montesa Honda development team, together with the close collaboration of the R&D departments of Motor Honda Co. Ltd, set to work to develop the new Cota 300RR, a model with a clear racing orientation that does not renounce the high quality standards distinctive of the brand.
Montesa Cota 300RR 2016
Several improvements to the Cota 300RR’s engine, including less engine braking The new Cota 300RR is a motorcycle designed for racing, hence its RR (Race Ready) name. The model has the proven experience inherited from the competition machines used by Montesa riders in the Trial World Championship, Eddie Karlsson and Oriol Noguera, from which it adopts most of its components and technical solutions. Without a doubt, the Cota 300RR is the mass-produced model that most closely resembles the factory prototypes piloted by Toni Bou, Takahisa Fujinami and Jaime Busto. In short, a true competition motorcycle, within the reach of fans.
The development team of the Cota 300RR has worked on two fundamental aspects: increasing the power and lightening the whole package. To this end, the thermodynamic unit has a new engine that stands out for a notable increase in displacement, based on increasing the bore and also the stroke of the piston, an aspect that, added to the new fuel pump with a higher flow rate, achieves a remarkable increase in torque and power, especially in mediums. while maintaining its well-known smoothness of response in bass.
On the other hand, the model has been subjected to an important weight loss diet based on reducing weight where it is most effective. As a result, the model now features a lightweight TECH suspension fork with aluminium bars and adopts new lightened and machined wheel hubs in aluminium.
All in all, these solutions represent a weight saving of 2 kg compared to the Cota 4RT.

The application of these components, together with a significant reduction in engine braking and the repositioning of the footrests, result in a greater feeling of lightness of the whole set.
The displacement of the new

Montesa Cota

increases to 288ccAmong other improvements, the adoption of a new SHOWA shock absorber that contributes to improved traction, or the new brake and clutch master cylinders, which improve feel and performance, also stand out. The Michelin X11 tires also offer excellent grip and traction.
Montesa Cota 300RR 2016
All in all, the increase in power, the reduction of engine braking, the reduction in weight of the assembly and the new suspensions, make the bike in general feel faster, more powerful, lighter and easier to ride, characteristics of vital importance in a model with a clear racing orientation

MONTESA COTA 300RR MANUFACTURING

Like the

Cota 4RT260

and Race Replica, the 300RR is manufactured exclusively and for everyone at Montesa Honda’s state-of-the-art facility in Santa Perpètua de Mogoda, Barcelona. It should be noted that all production processes are carried out in the factory, including: engine assembly, plastic injection, manufacture of the aluminum frame, fuel tank and swingarm, processes that guarantee the high levels of quality of the brand.

MONTESA COTA 300RR DESIGN AND AESTHETICS

Overall, Montesa red is the predominant colour on the new Cota 300RR. Thus, red is present on the tank and fenders, combined with black details and the 4RT and Cota 300RR logos. The chassis is anodized in black, the same color that paints the clutch and ignition covers, which gives it an extra sportiness. The rims, also anodized in black, are elegantly combined with the red stickers.
Montesa Cota 300RR 2016
The Montesa Cota 300RR will be available from October 2015The Montesa models have always stood out for their high quality finishes and the excellent level of components that keep their properties intact over time. As it could not be otherwise, this is an aspect that is maintained in the new Cota 300RR with the adoption of plastic and adhesives of the highest quality.

MONTESA COTA 300RR ENGINE

The Cota 300RR is equipped with a completely new engine, based on the one used by the Montesa of Eddie Karlsson and Oriol Noguera, who participate in the Trial World Championship with the support of the brand.
The increase in displacement to 288cc has been achieved not only by increasing the piston diameter (from 78mm to 80mm), but also the stroke (which is increased by 3mm). This major change in dimensions has required a complete redesign of the engine, which now uses a new crankshaft-connecting rod, cylinder and piston assembly. The use of these new components has also required modifying the two semi-crankcases, machining their surfaces to allow the new components to be assembled.
Along with the increase in displacement, it is worth noting the adoption of a new fuel pump with the PGM-FI injection system that offers a higher flow rate of gasoline. At the same time, the ECU* now has a new ignition mapping developed to optimize the performance of the new engine.
Montesa Cota 300RR 2016
Detail of the double map of the ECU for the racing modelAlthough it is true that one of the benefits derived from the adoption of the PGM-FI electronic fuel injection system is the self-adjustment of the mixture to different weather conditions, motorcycles intended for competition will be able to make use of the Full Power (non-registrable) ECU injection body that incorporates two ignition maps selectable by means of a switch located on the handlebar: Mode 1, suitable for low traction conditions; and Mode 2, which is the map that offers maximum power. The injection-ECU body is not sealed, so it is possible to act and vary the ignition and power maps with the help of a laptop.
* The versions of the so-called Full Power models (not registrable) are already equipped with all these components from the outset.
The application of all these changes translates into a fuller and more energetic power curve throughout the rev range but which is especially noticeable in the mids while maintaining its well-known smoothness of response at low revs, also highlighting the perfect connection between the throttle control and the final transmission, a key aspect in top-level trials and in which the exquisiteness of operation of the PGM-FI electronic fuel injection system is of vital importance.
Montesa Cota 300RR 2016 power
It is also worth mentioning the work carried out in the reduction of engine braking by applying a crankcase gas decompression system together with the work carried out on the electronics to minimise this effect. As a result, when the throttle is cut off, the engine only has a minimal engine braking effect, making the motorcycle feel much lighter and more controllable.
The clutch system has also been modified to cope with the increase in power, while the clutch pump has undergone improvements to provide a racing feel.
The increase in displacement and the consequent increase in compression have led to the incorporation of a longer starter lever to facilitate the start of the engine.
With all the performance improvements of this new engine, the Cota 300RR can tackle areas that could hardly be overcome with the Cota 4RT260 and Race Replica.
* The versions of the Full Power models (not registrable), have all these new features plus an ECU with a double ignition map that is activated by a switch located on the handlebars.
Thus, in addition to the standard map, a second map can also be selected for low-traction conditions.

MONTESA COTA 300RR CYCLE PART

One of the main objectives in the development of the Cota 300RR was to lighten the package, and provide a greater feeling of lightness, more control and agility of the bike. One of the aspects that contributes to achieving this objective is the repositioning of the footpegs, located 5mm lower and 5mm further back, which manages to delay the position of the rider and lighten the front axle.
The Cota 300RR is equipped with the competitive Michelin X11 tyres, which offer an excellent compromise between traction, feel, grip and lightness. The wheels are equipped with lightweight 7075 T6 aluminum machined hubs, anodized in black, and with the RR logo laser engraved. The new DID aluminium wheels also contribute to the lightening of the package, which represent significant weight savings.
Montesa Cota 300RR 2016
In addition, the Cota 300RR, like the Cota 4RT260 and Race Replica models, continues to rely on a lightweight and robust aluminum frame and swingarm assembly with proven reliability and performance.

MONTESA COTA 300RR SUSPENSIONS

In search of greater lightness, as a novelty the Cota 300RR is equipped with a TECH fork with gold-anodized aluminum bars, which is another significant weight saving. As for the rear shock, a new Showa shock absorber has been relied on that features modifications at the hydraulic level and settings that make the bike as a whole feel lighter and more stable, as well as leading to a significant improvement in traction and less fatigue for the rider.

MONTESA COTA 300RR BRAKES

The Cota 300RR features a front brake assembly that incorporates a 4-piston monoblock caliper, providing greater effectiveness and stopping power. The new brake and clutch master cylinders, with red anodized covers, are signed by Braktec, and improve the feel and performance.

MONTESA COTA EQUIPMENT 300RR

The Montesa Cota 300RR offers a high level of equipment, highlighting the advanced electrical system that, without a battery, manages to power, among others, the injection system or the ignition coil itself. Also noteworthy is the use of a tilt sensor that switches off the ignition when the motorcycle is lying on the ground with an incline greater than 65° for a fraction of time greater than 7 seconds. With this device, the risk exposure by the rider is reduced while protecting the engine, especially in situations where the engine may be revved.
Montesa Cota 300RR 2016
The driving position also varies, being lower and more rearward compared to the Cota 4RTAin addition, it incorporates the “man overboard”, a practical magnet-type switch with automatic stop that acts in the event of a fall. When switched off, the engine stops automatically as an active safety system.
The rims maintain their 32-spoke configuration and the rear the innovative system that incorporates centrally adjustable spokes achieving a significant weight reduction, easy maintenance while allowing the mounting of tubeless tires, which in turn contribute to weight reduction. Also noteworthy in this regard is the Renthal Fat Bar handlebar made of aluminium.
