Interview with Jorge Casales

Casales340Jorge Casales is one of the national riders who, like Pol Tarrés, is called to be one of the candidates who will try to fight in a few years to score world and national Trial titles. His young age, only fifteen years old, and the fact that he is already in the “top ten” of the national Trial are the best arguments to achieve a career full of success.

We spoke with Jorge about how he got started in the specialty and what his short- and long-term concerns are.

My hobby started at a very  young age because my father already practiced this sport. When I was 2 and a half years old, I had my first bike, a Yamaha pw motocross bike adapted to my height. At the age of 3 I was a 50 trial sherco and at 5 I returned to motocross with a ktm 50, then I had a Suzuki rm 65, at the age of 9 I started to participate in the Asturian trial championship with a gasgas txt rookie 80, from there we threw ourselves fully into the trial, training solely and exclusively trial, until today also in the free spaces I do motocross with a Suzuki rm-z 450 which I have a great time with.

TRIALWORLD: Jorge, tell us what your plans are for 2011

JORGE CASALES: I plan to race in the Spanish tr2 championship and the Galician tr1 championship.

jorge_casalesTW: How do you organize yourself to reconcile training and studies?

JC: I dedicate every hour of the day and every day to both. I’m very short of time, but if I want to maintain my progression in both, it’s the only formula to be able to achieve it.

TW: Tell us what your training is like during a normal week of class and what it’s like in another week when there’s a race on the weekend.

JC: A normal week I train Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. And when there is a race it depends on how far away it is, normally I have 2200 km or more, between going and coming, so then I have to leave on Thursday or Friday. In those weeks I train very little.

TW: Is it necessary to complement motorcycle training with physical preparation or is it not so important at your age?

JC: No, it’s not really important, but it’s important to complement it with biketrial to get some technique and try to apply them later on the bike.

TW: Where do you think is the key and the difference between a young guy who starts doing trials to have fun and another who wants to be a professional?

JC: One is a normal kid and the other is a great athlete whether it’s trial, soccer… All your free time should be spent playing sports.

TW: What do you like most about racing?

JC: That there is a good organization, and competitiveness among the rivals.

TW: Anything that doesn’t convince you?

JC: That trial is becoming more and more like an indoor enduro, due to the very short times they give to do the races, which forces you to run a lot in the intersections and you can hardly enjoy the race, in addition to the risk that it entails.

TW: Would you like to dedicate yourself professionally to Trial or do you think it is a good springboard to do other off-road specialties? See Mario Román…

JC: I would like to dedicate myself professionally to trial.

TW: What do you think of the rulebook? Do you think it favors the arrival of young promises?

JC: I don’t understand what they want to achieve in the Spanish championship and I don’t think the people who are watching it know much. What it favors is the arrival of more veteran riders and people who have trial as a simple hobby. The regulation at European or global level is perfect.

TW: Do you do a lot of media to stand out in Trial or does the skill of the rider and his perseverance in training count more?

JC: I think you need resources if you live in Pontevedra since each race can cost you about 1000€ Ibiza, Barcelona… And you also need to be a good rider and give your all in every training session and be able to progress when you are already at a high point, which is what is most difficult.

TW: Finally, tell us where you would like to go in the world of Trial and in what timeframe you would like to achieve it.

JC: To get into the top 5 of the junior world championship that I will do next year.
