Toby Martyn fractures two vertebrae in Arteixo: “it could have been avoided”

The British rider Toby Martyn was forced to abandon the second day of the Spanish Trial GP in zone five of the first lap, when he suffered a fall, with the misfortune of falling backwards on a group of rocks, having to be attended to immediately by the medical team.

This zone five was one of those that he failed to overcome on the first day of the race, adding two fiascos. Today, Sunday, it was marked again within the course in the same conditions as Saturday, that is, without the presence of backpackers or assistance, one of the rules that this year has been proposed by the FIM (50% of the sections are without backpacking), but this unfortunate blow occurred, whose balance for the British rider is two broken vertebrae.

These new “no backpacking” areas are new this year and are a rule that is generally not liked by pilots. The fact that Toby has fallen in one of these zones fuels the debate and is encouraging pilots to consider some kind of measure to return to the traditional twelve-zone backpacking format.

Toby Martyn will be injured for a few weeks and will miss the next GP

COULD THE FALL HAVE BEEN PREVENTED?

The fall did not occur in one of the critical points of the area, which was rather technical at this point, and we do not know if under normal attendance circumstances the result would have been the same, but what is clear is that the debate is not without controversy. According to Toby Martyn himself: “I had to abandon the race after learning that, as a result of a fall, I had fractured two vertebrae in my lower back. This means that in the next few weeks I will not be able to compete or train. I feel disappointed and frustrated, feeling that this injury could have been avoided.”
