Interview with Adrián Fernández, Spanish TrialE Champion with Electric Motion

HOW DID YOU COME TO RIDE AN ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE?

Switching from an explosion bike like the one I had (a Sherco Factory 300) to an electric bike like the EPure always raises doubts. I was looking for new challenges, something that would motivate me, and meeting Jorge from Electric Motion Spain was a great first step to encourage me to ride it.

WHAT DID THE JUMP FROM THE 2019 MODEL TO 2020 MEAN TO YOU?

Well, the clutch is a big part of it. It really is a completely new bike in terms of chassis and mechanics, but it is true that what I get the most out of in the context of a high-level trial is the mechanical clutch. Before, with the electronic clutch, it didn’t have the same effectiveness.

HOW DO YOU MANAGE AUTONOMY IN COMPETITION?

In training I do very well. As we usually do relatively little interzone in training, the equivalence is higher than that of a fuel tank. I go out to train for about 3 hours and usually come back with loads above 30% – 40%.

In competition we have to differentiate the regional races from the regional championship. In the national we have two laps and a twenty-minute break between each of them. On the first lap I usually use 50% of battery (for example in a race that has about 12 kilometers of interzone) and with those minutes of pause we manage to bring the load up to 90% for the second lap.

In the three-lap seven-zone regionals, where the interzone is usually few, the entire race is covered without problems with the same initial load that we bring from home.

WHAT MAINTENANCE DOES YOUR ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE REQUIRE?

Basically, wash the bike and plug it in. Every time I go out, I adjust the controls, grease the chain and check the pressures. As for the oil, as it has very little contamination, it has a lot of endurance.
