ASPECTS PART CYCLE highlights

As usual, we start by contextualizing the model within the range.
Until 2019, TRS had the standard One, the One Raga Racing and the One Gold in its trial catalogue.

The situation is interesting, because the Raga Racing stands out a lot in sales. The Gold sells well too, but it’s a series of 150 units. On the other hand, the standard One, much more accessible in price and humble in components, hardly has any prominence.

Although not many users knew it, at that point the One had the engine of the 2016 model, while the Raga Racing and the Gold had been with the ” Engine Revolution” engine for a year, which receives improvements in the cylinder, crankcases, clutch, water pump and other internal details of the engine.

What to do if your reference bike is the most expensive in your catalog but you want to expand the range? Well, look for the formula to cheapen that same version, without losing the essence.

TRRS One R vs RAGA Racing Differences

TRRS ONE R

TRRS ONE RR

Suspensions vary. On the One R we always find the Tech fork with aluminium bars, embraced by cast seatposts. On the One RR it will be identical only on the electric start model; the standard one equips Tech fork with steel bars and the seatposts of this model are always machined. At the rear, both have Reiger, but adjustable in one way, and not in two as in the RR.

The tyres are Dunlop D803GP versus the Michelin X11 of the RR. The handlebars, in both cases signed by Nekken, but with different models.

In terms of brakes, the One R has a Braktec kit with Galder discs, as does the RR. On the R, however, we see the 2019 set, with a different caliper, pumps with other hinges and the rear pump without an integrated fluid reservoir.

Mechanically they are very similar. They have the same engine, but the One R is equipped with a different cylinder head and standard cooling tubes instead of silicone.

Finally, our protagonist does not have a “man overboard” stop device or the transmission kit with a race-approved crown. His older sister, yes.

The electric start of the TRRS

Until a few years ago it was unthinkable to think that a trial bike could have an electric starter. In a market whose context is one of eternal struggle for weight reduction and technical minimalism, thinking of a component that modifies the aesthetics of the crankcase and needs a battery to work, might seem like a utopia.

Nothing could be further from the truth. The user demands technology, ease of use and resources that are resolute in the mountains. And therefore, electric starter is a precious commodity, especially if you’re in a pinch.

Jordi Tarrés said in 2019: “I blindly believe in this project”.

The challenge required modifying the TRRS engine, introducing a new crankcase, new crankshaft and a new magnetic flywheel with its cover.
In its innards, it works with an oil-bathed bearing system. Work has been done to achieve an optimal gear ratio, driven by a powerful 500W MITSUBA SM18 motor together with a Lithium-Ion battery of only 400 grams located behind the headlight.

All this represents a final weight of slightly less than two kilos compared to the model of the same name without electric starter.

Thorough Test TRRS One R

Once we have reviewed the technical innovations and understood the place that our protagonist occupies in the range, it is time to evaluate and judge its dynamic behavior.

First of all, we focus on the start-up. The electric start system has forced the fuel tap to be repositioned (successfully) in the rear window of its frame. Of course, now we don’t have a reserve position, only open or closed. More inaccessible is the Keihin’s starter, which with all the starter kit next to it ends up being somewhat uncomfortable to access to remove it.

About the start-up, its operation and performance is fantastic. You don’t know how awkward it is to be starting the bike for a while in the areas until you try this device. Great invention! As a single note, it would probably have been interesting if in order to move the starter motor it was necessary to have the clutch engaged. Now, if the bike has a gear engaged, you can press the clutchless button and get a scare.

THINGS YOU’RE INITIALLY WONDERING ABOUT

1) Weight. This is an aspect that has been put a lot of thought into the bike, and it shows. The battery goes behind the headlight (400 grams) and is compensated by an aluminum fork instead of steel. Therefore, little is appreciated in terms of weight. The rest of the system is at a very central and low point on the bike, so dynamically it doesn’t condition you either. All in all, we are talking about an extra two kilos compared to the standard model, which is relatively low if we take into account that it remains below 70 kilos.

2) Exposure to blows. In this case, the system is quite well integrated and resolved on the engine block. It does not go out of the frame line and the qualities are very good, so we do not compromise the mechanics more than necessary in the event of a fall.

3) Charging the battery. Although it is a small battery and we could run out of charge in case of excessive attempts to start up, the positive point is that it recharges dynamically. That is to say, we have the kick-start as an emergency and once it is running, the battery recharges.

Now it is. We have the option of kick-starting, which is always a good resource for an emergency, and in this case we also have the “magic button”. To start the TRRS electrically it is not necessary to operate the clutch, something that would not have been bad for safety, so we just press and the piston starts working.

"You don't know how convenient and practical electric start is until you try it. Dynamically, the distribution of this extra weight has been so aptly conceived that it is difficult to appreciate it."

Front, on the back of the headlight, you have the electric start battery, which is very well protected and you don’t even know it exists. On the non-boot model, the headlight is standard, of course. Otherwise, at the control level, you feel like always on a TRRS: at home. The riding position is neutral, comfortable, easy to understand to balance yourself without too much self-confidence.

The gearbox, buttery smooth and precise; and the feel of the levers, the well-known feel of Braktec equipment.

Easy to squeeze and accurate

Dynamically it is an easy and precise bike. The level of the One R has grown noticeably compared to the standard One and its feel is very similar to that of the RR. What’s more, depending on the rider, you may find more preferences even in our protagonist than in the top range.

The great work of this bike lies in its successful weight distribution. Even with the starter system, which adds just under two kilos to the set, it doesn’t lose that spark of agility that characterizes the TRRS. An agility in excellent harmony with the poise and nobility of its chassis, which continues to be one of its main strengths. In traced areas he treads with nobility, without being heavier.

Behind, the Reiger works like a charm. If they didn’t tell you about the routes or that it’s different from the one equipped by the RR, you wouldn’t even notice it. Only if you’re a “top” or need very precise settings, you’ll miss those extra settings. Reiger has already become one of the main suppliers of shock absorbers, so its expertise is more than consolidated to offer good absorption, precision and a lively character that brings agility and freshness to the rear axle.

Versatile and powerful mechanics

In terms of mechanics, the brand’s sixth year is appreciated. In the case of the model with electric start, it is the third evolution of the engine. The second was in 2018, where it received improvements to the clutch, water pump and thermodynamic assembly. Now, the electric start has forced the modification of the crankshaft, ignited along with its cover, the crankcases and other minor details.

The finishes of the engine are improved, especially the silencer, which finally receives a superior reinforcement in its final stretch. It also improves the reliability of the air filter box, which now brings more flow to the mechanics.

This time we have jumped on the 250cc version, although we have already tested the rest of the brand’s displacements. The quarter liter is probably the most logical and practical option for 80% of fans. You never lack power, but it gives you room at low revs to find good traction and reduces the physical demand on the rider.

Probably the best thing about the TRRS engine is how easy it is to squeeze. Its linear and predictable response allows you to understand their reactions from the first moment, obtaining a very natural ride. The clutch, being one of the points of continuous improvement edition after edition and for the amateur level, complies with the premises of smoothness and progressivity that is usually demanded.

Conclusions

TRS Motorcycles has become one of the leading brands in the market in just a few years. Its successes in competition, the hand of Jordi Tarrés, his professional team and the success with the design of a motorcycle that combines quality with performance, facilitates its appeal among users.

The fact of innovating in a component such as the electric starter, which is designed for the amateur and not for professional riders, is very valuable. Extras like this open up access for new customers and, of course, help older customers to make it easier for them to manoeuvre in the mountains.

Our opinion, after testing, is that it is an interesting extra for all audiences. We have no doubt that we will soon see it in a large part of the market as a highly appreciated commodity.

As points for improvement, the One R should come standard with homologated components such as the “man overboard” stop system or the safety crown. Other details, such as machined seatposts, would help maintain the high quality of components throughout the bike. We also consider that the electric start system should only be able to be operated if the clutch is depressed, as it would avoid the possibility of being started with the gear engaged without a pilot at the controls.

For the rest, the €700 discount it offers on the One RR is a great attraction in its favor, since with this high level it does not justify as much as a couple of years ago the effort to acquire a higher range. In addition, aesthetically, the graphics of this 2021 edition are very successful, maintaining the Racing essence, but with a more elegant touch than the RR or the Gold.
