Presentation Montesa Cota 301RR 2020

The Montesada 2019 has been the unbeatable setting for the world premiere of the Montesa Cota 301RR, a completely new acronym that symbolizes an important evolution of the top-of-the-range Cota model, which until now was the Montesa Cota 300RR.

Along with today’s presentation, the Trialworld team will be doing a dynamic test with which we will make an extended report in the coming days.

MONTESA COTA 301RR ENGINE NEWS

The new Cota 301RR inherits the engine of the bike that participates in the Trial2 World Championship and that has obtained such good results, proclaiming itself world champion of the category with the Spanish rider Gabriel Marcelli. The main objective of the engineers with this new model has been to bring it as close as possible to the racing model. The displacement has been increased from the 288cc of the 300RR to 298cc (maximum displacement allowed in the Trial2 World Championship), increasing the size of the piston and cylinder.

Alongside this increase in displacement, the Cota 301RR benefits from a number of important changes to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) along with a redesign of the crankcase gas decompression system in favour of a clear reduction in engine braking. In this way, when the gas is cut off, the motorcycle feels much lighter and more controllable. To achieve this, the diameter of the crankcase vent has also been increased from 1.9mm to 2.25mm, and is now identical to the TrialGP world champion bike of Toni Bou and Fujinami.

On the other hand, the crankshaft now has more inertia to achieve greater progressivity. In this way, a notable improvement in the response in the underbody and a behavior more similar to the motorcycles that compete in the World Championship is achieved. In this sense, it is worth highlighting the perfect connection between the throttle control and the final transmission, a key aspect in the top-level trial and in which the exquisiteness of the PGM-FI electronic fuel injection system is of vital importance.

CYCLE PART

The Cota 301RR relies on a lightweight aluminium frame and swingarm with proven reliability and performance.
This new model is equipped with the lobed brake discs that the competition team’s machines mount on both trains, using the FIM homologated rear disc. In this way, it now achieves more bite and more stopping power in both trains.

Continuing with the similarities with the Montesa of the Trial World Championship, the aluminum silencer has also been redesigned. Its resistance has been increased, increasing the volume of the silencer and the diameter of the inner tube. All this, together with the other engine changes, has resulted in a noticeable increase in torque throughout the rev range, benefiting from up to 16% more power and torque at low and medium revs. In addition, it incorporates a new exhaust guard. On the other hand, to improve the protection of the crankcase, a new rubber has been placed between the crankcase and the skid plate, much more enveloping, also based on the TrialGP and Trial2 world champions.

The Cota 301 still features the lightweight TECH suspension fork with aluminium bars and adopts lightweight wheel hubs machined from aluminium, solutions that result in significant weight savings. At the rear, it continues to be equipped with a SHOWA shock absorber that contributes to improved traction.

MONTESA COTA DESIGN 301RR

In general terms, the new Cota 301RR has more aggressive and angular lines, providing a sportier and more modern touch. In this regard, it is worth highlighting the new, higher rear fender and the new design of the fuel tank, which leaves behind its rounded shapes to make way for a more Racing design. Also noteworthy is the new LED racing headlight.
But without a doubt, one of the aspects that will attract the most attention are the new colors of this model, unheard of until now in Montesa and in trial bikes. It is a dark grey colour that, elegantly combined with the unmistakable Montesa red, and some white details, gives it an unprecedented originality and eye-catching. This innovative combination is also enhanced by the elegant gilding of the fork bottles and a few other components. In addition, for the most nostalgic, the Cota 301RR will also be available with the red and black option, more in line with its predecessor, the Cota 300RR.

The Montesa have always stood out for the high quality of finishes and the excellent level of components that keep their properties intact over time. As it could not be otherwise, this is an aspect that is maintained in this new model with the adoption of plastic and adhesives of the highest quality.
Competition Parts Kit
Along with the motorcycle, an exclusive kit of parts made of carbon is delivered, consisting of:
• Clutch cover
• Exhaust elbow guard.
In addition, the kit includes:
• A lightweight LED headlight face shield for competition use only.

MOUNTAIN DEVELOPMENT CONCEPT COTA 301RR

Since its appearance, the Montesa Cota 4RT model created a revolution in the world of trial, a discipline completely dominated by 2-stroke mechanics, engines of relative mechanical simplicity and at the same time extremely compact that, however, penalized by a high level of polluting emissions.
So much so that, anticipating the anti-pollution regulations that were to come into force in 2006, Montesa, in close collaboration with Honda Motor Co., developed the Montesa Cota 4RT, an advanced trial motorcycle equipped with a compact and revolutionary 4-stroke 4-valve engine powered by PGM-FI electronic fuel injection. It is highly efficient in terms of the level of pollutant emissions as well as its significant torque and power values.
In addition, the chassis also proved to be certainly innovative with the adoption of a lightweight aluminium frame and the use of a set of SHOWA suspensions of the highest quality, highlighting the successful design of the rear suspension system. From the outset, the performance of the amazing 250cc engine amazed to be able to compete head-to-head against the superior 2-stroke machines of similar displacement.
The Montesa Cota 4RT stood out for its exclusivity in terms of technological solutions, but also for being a model of the highest quality and more than proven reliability, aspects certainly valued by the brand’s customers.
Following this philosophy, which combines the most advanced technology and maximum respect for the environment, in 2013 Montesa presented the new Cota 4RT260, a completely new motorcycle that maintained the main hallmarks of the Cota 4RT, increasing its performance. In the same vein, in 2015 the brand also launched its competitive Cota 300RR, a more racing-oriented model than the Cota 4RT260, but which still shared 4-stroke technology with it.
Montesa Cota 50th anniversary
For the 2016 season, and without losing its hallmarks, Montesa decided to present the 4RIDE, a model that came to the market to recover a concept that the brand itself began with models such as the trail version of the Cota 247 or the Cota 348 and that it consolidated with the Evasión. It was a motorcycle focused on trial excursions.
Montesa Cota 300RR 2017
For the 2020 season, Montesa has surprised with the announcement of the new Cota 301RR, a model that replaces the 300RR and whose objective has been to bring it even closer to the world champion competition bike. The 301RR is the most powerful Cota ever produced. It is a motorcycle designed for racing, hence its surname RR (Race Ready). The model has the proven experience inherited from the competition machines used by the Montesa riders in the Trial World Championship, from which it adopts most of its components and technical solutions. The Cota 301RR is basically the same bike with which Gabriel Marcelli has been proclaimed Trial2 World Champion. A success that has been completed by the second place of Matteo Grattarola (world champion in the category last season) and with the fifth place of Francesc Moret. In short, a true competition motorcycle, within the reach of fans.
