Three years and forty-five races later, he won his first race, in Nigrán, Spain. Like that victory, and until last weekend, 99 more to break one of the data that he waited the longest to be beaten: the highest number of victories in the top competition: 100. -Congratulations, Toni. You have once again made history in this sport that is as technical as it is exciting: 100 victories out of 200 participations in the World Cup. Unusual!
-Yes, thank you very much. I’m very happy and excited about the race this past Sunday, how everything went and, also, to get to the magic number. To win 100 races is sensational, but to do it in 200 races, it’s incredibly effective. I’ve been very excited to achieve it and I think it’s the result of the great work we’ve been doing for more than ten years with the team. But one thing is clear to me: I will continue to fight for future successes.
Has the feeling of the first victory, in 2006, been repeated this weekend as well? Were you aware that you were marking a global milestone?
“I don’t know if I could describe the emotions. A mixture of joy, satisfaction, also taking a weight off my shoulders, because sometimes, wanting to break a record can turn against you… But yes, from the moment I won the 100th race, I was happy, a lot. Although we have to be aware that we are only halfway through the championship: there is still a long way to go…

-Your data is stratospheric; Very few athletes have achieved such excellent figures in any of the competitions.
-The most important thing about all this is the great luck of being able to be at a high level of shape, which means that you can stay among the first on a regular basis. We’ve had a lot of wins, so many that you lose count. In fact, if it doesn’t happen because the people on my team who wear it tell me to, I don’t know what numbers I have, because it’s something that I prefer not to have in my head. These are spectacular numbers, yes. I have to be grateful to the people who have helped me to do this, to the whole team, and above all, since I was a child; The space to thank them would have to be very large. That’s why I’m very happy and, what’s more, motivated. Yes, motivated to achieve more success and to be able to grow these numbers.
-Are there many elite athletes on the list that you admire?
“Yes, many! Usain Bolt, Phelps, Schumacher, Cairoli… There are many idols. To be on a list with them makes me especially excited. So many successes in such a short space of time is a big deal.

-Who do you like or would you have liked to see live?
-Bolt is one of those I’ve always liked to see in action: his power and dominance of the race is spectacular. I would also have liked to see Mohammad Ali, who has a lot of wins and few losses. Another of those I like, because he is a contemporary of mine, is Antonio Cairoli, also with similar figures, and we see him frequently at the FIM galas. He had years with major injuries and has been able to return with as much or more strength to the competition and win the world championship again.

-It seems obvious to think that you remember the first victory… But will you remember number 100?
-Yes, sure. The first one is unforgettable, I remember perfectly where and how it was, and so will be the 100th because this year is also special: the injury and breaking Lampkin’s record. There was talk of it in Japan, and it couldn’t be, but both the race in Andorra, where I won the 99th, and the one in Portugal, with the 100th, are races that I will never forget.
