Stage 8: Laia without backpacking. Pº50

laiaetapa6The eighth stage was expected to be the toughest of the entire Dakar, with more than 400 kilometres of special stage and a lot of mud in the early stages of the race. It was a typical day where anything could happen. For Laia Sanz it has been a negative day, as she has lost her squire, Marc Guash, in a hard fall that has forced the Gas Gas pilot to be evacuated by helicopter with, apparently, four broken ribs.

Laia will therefore have to continue her journey in the Dakar 2012 alone, also being the only woman in the race at the moment. At the end of the day, Laia declared: “Very bad news today!! My teammate Marc Guasch has crashed and will not be able to continue in the race. Bad luck!! I feel terrible for him!! Also, he was doing a very good job and we got along very well. Now it’s time to keep going and try to do well to get to Lima… It’s going to be hard to sleep today.”

In today’s stage, Laia Sanz entered in 55th position, more than an hour behind the winner of the day, Marc Coma, who is also the new leader of the provisional standings, where Laia occupies the 50th position and maintains her climb of positions.
