Spanish GP day 1: Victory for Cabestany and race for Jaime Busto

The trial world championship kicked off today in Cal Rosal (Barcelona) ready to put some big surprises in the script. The first novelty is the victory of Albert Cabestany, who with his regularity and success has managed to break the alternation of victories that until now only Bou or Raga starred in.
Cabestany’s merit is beastly. This was the first race of his twentieth season in the elite of the trial world championship. A whole life dedicated to this sport and always, in every race, being among the favorites for victory.
This stage coincides with the total consecration of the young promises. Jaime Busto was close to pulling off a surprise today, as if he hadn’t made certain mistakes on the last lap the victory would have gone to him. According to Jaime: “In the first two laps I felt super-comfortable, especially in the first lap, which felt like I’d been here all my life. In the third I found some ruts and I made three mistakes that I shouldn’t have made, such as breaking a strap with my boot or trajectory errors. We hope tomorrow will be better.”
For his part, the defending champion and main favourite, Toni Bou, has been one point away from victory in one of the most difficult weeks of his sporting career, where he has had to overcome the pain of his torn ligament in his right shoulder and despite his pain he has achieved a brilliant second position.

According to Toni: “I’m very happy with how I’m doing physically. I’ve been very tired, it’s been very hard, but I’m satisfied, because if things continue to go like this, it will get better. The result is the least important, I am very happy and I want to thank the whole team and especially Dr. Joaquim Terricabras, who has done a great job. I am very grateful to him. I have a torn tendon and a dislocated bicep. The bodybuilding holds up and I can ride a motorcycle. The third lap was very good. Tomorrow I’ll be devastated, because I’m so tired. If we can salvage the weekend and go to Japan recovered, it will be great. We went from thinking the championship was lost to continuing to fight for the top positions.”
The podium was completed by Adam Raga, just three points behind Cabestany and two behind Toni Bou. Fourth was Jaime Busto, followed by Jeroni Fajardo and Jorge Casales.
Tomorrow, Sunday, the second round of the 2016 World Championship will be held at the same venue.
