Replacing front brake pads on a trial bike

Braking is one of the key points in the trial bike, as it determines the precision in all technical aspects of riding, and is also a key point for the placement of the
bike
in the zone.

At
Trialworld Garage
we explain to you, step by step, how you should change the brake pads on your trial bike. There may be small variations between models, since for example the latest
Braktec brake calipers
do not have through screws as it is a monobloc caliper. However, this tutorial helps you follow the steps and precautions for any model.

WHEN TO CHANGE THE BRAKE PADS ON THE TRIAL BIKE?

The wear of the
trial brake pads
is very slow, as these bikes hardly pick up speed and work at low temperatures. This does not mean, however, that we should not check them periodically and, if the performance is not optimal, replace them even if they still have a useful life.

There are several symptoms that warn us of poor brake performance on a trial bike:

Case 1.- Excessively spongy feel, which, in addition to checking the pads, must lead to checking the pump and bleeding the braking circuit.

Case 2.- The trial bike does not stop immediately and the wheel continues its trajectory even if the lever is squeezed to the maximum. Here the pads may be contaminated with some oil or do not rest on the disc as they should.

Case 3.- The brake pads (inside, outside, or both) are about to touch the iron.

Case 4.- If we detect a poor efficiency in the brake of the trial bike and the pad still has a useful surface for use, we may be facing the case that the brake pads are crystallized and the material is not doing its job. In this case, the brake pads of the trial bike must be replaced.

HOW DO YOU CHANGE THE BRAKE PADS ON THE TRIAL BIKE?

It is a relatively simple task and the estimated time is between 20 and 30 minutes.

Tools needed: pliers, screwdriver, allen wrench set and fixed wrench set (usually 13mm.)

Necessary products: logically you need to buy
new brake pads for trial bikes
(you must check well what your caliper is and choose the right pads). It is also likely that DOT4 brake fluid is also available in case the fluid is spoiled or contaminated, or you simply need to refill the level.

We also recommend using a Motul Brake Cleaner to leave the caliper completely clean of ferode so that the pistons work optimally.

MOUNTING BRAKE PADS ON THE TRIAL BIKE

The task of fitting new brake pads on a trial bike is quite simple, but we must follow the steps in detail.

Step 1: we must remove the brake caliper from its anchor and then have access to the pads.

Step 2: We will take the opportunity to take a screwdriver and pry it in the center so that the pistons of the caliper return to their original position (with wear, the pistons come out more to attach to the disc).

Step 3: Once the pistons are in their correct place, we proceed to remove the brake pads and clean the inside of the caliper with a specific brake product, Brake Cleaner .

Step 4: And then the reverse work. Placing the pads, we re-anchor the caliper to the fork bottle and tighten all the screws.

It is normal that at the beginning the bike brakes little, as it needs a short period of engagement and rolling of the pad to the brake disc.

A trick is to drive a few meters with the brake pressed to bring the system up to temperature and then pour cold water on the disc. This will help clean debris off the disc. We must be careful not to exceed the heating temperature.
