Maintenance and cleaning of the air filter on the trial bike

The function of the air filter on a trial bike is equivalent to that performed by the kidneys in the human body. A dirty air filter limits the airflow demanded by the engine and draws impurities into the combustion chamber.

The practice of trial in most cases is carried out in terrain where dust particles and other impurities take center stage. This can be accentuated if we ride in a group or are in competitions, as more dirt is lifted from the ground. For this reason, we recommend regular maintenance of the air filter on the trial bike , for example every two rides, which can be increased and reduced depending on the circumstances of the terrain.

CONSEQUENCES OF A BAD AIR FILTER

The life of our engines is intimately linked to the quality of the air they absorb. In the event that an air filter becomes clogged due to dirt, the flow of air to the engine’s intake system would be significantly reduced, creating an imbalance in the air-gasoline mixture that feeds the engine, i.e. the carburetion –
This is how a trial bike is carburized
– it starts to be unstable. As a consequence, the engine loses power and the throttle response slows down.

Most of the impurities that our engines breathe are usually small particles of soil. Proper maintenance stops particles and prevents premature wear of the engine and its elements, especially the cylinder walls and rings.

In the case of off-road motorcycles, the most common thing is to find foam filters made of foam or synthetic sponge, divided into several layers. This material must be impregnated with a specific oil, which retains airborne dust particles.

RECOMMENDATION

A solution to be agile and not wait for the filter to have to dry, is to have a replacement air filter, so that there will always be a clean one available while the previous one is being washed. In

WHERE IS THE AIR FILTER ON THE TRIAL BIKE?

Usually, on trial bikes it is located under the seat. There are models in which a cover must be removed to access the filter and others, such as the Montesa in which it is necessary to remove the rear fin. The Shercos from 2010 to 2015 have the air filter box at the front, where the fuel tank is usually located.
If you can’t locate it, just guide yourself through the carburetor. It has two intakes, one goes to the cylinder and the other goes to the box where the filter is installed. Once the box is located, we will find the filter inside. While handling the air filter, tuck some paper into the intake intake to prevent impurities from entering the carburetor.
We also recommend cleaning the box where the air filter is installed with a damp paper or with soap and water if you disassemble it completely.

HOW TO WASH THE AIR FILTER ON THE TRIAL BIKE

Foam filters can be washed with soap and water or with specific products. We recommend caution with the use of this type of products, they are effective but if the instructions for use are not followed they can shorten the life of the air filter foam.

To dry the filter you can use an air compressor or wait a few hours until it is completely dry. Before mounting, we recommend applying this
special air filter oil
to retain dirt.
