Laia Sanz withdraws from the European Championships R.Czech Republic

laia_400Sanz will miss the next round of the European Women’s Trial Championship, which will be held on August 18 in the Czech Republic, as she has not fully recovered from the injuries that occurred at the Italian Enduro GP at the beginning of July. The Gas Gas and KH-7 pilot has waited until the last minute to make the decision whether or not to attend the test, “to give the
finger maximum recovery time”,
she says, but finally she has been forced to give up travelling to the Czech Republic.

This is how the multiple champion explains it: “I’ve thought a lot about the options and the risks, I’ve consulted the doctors, and I’ve had a hard time making this decision. My will has always been to compete; In all my career as a professional rider, I have never missed a competition, even when I have been physically depleted I have been on the bike, but this time the risk is very big. Although it doesn’t hurt much, the wound is still in a delicate state and after doing a test of only ten minutes with the bike, I saw that the appearance of the finger worsened.”

Sanz has finally been convinced after talking to doctors Ramon Cugat and Xavier Cuscó, who have advised him to give up because of how close he has been to losing his finger, and because if he competed this weekend he would run an unnecessary risk.

“Even if it annoys me, I’ve done what I had to do. This absence will almost certainly deprive me of my eleventh continental title, but there are many more titles to win and plenty of time ahead to win them. Now the important thing is to recover so that I can be fit in a month’s time, before the end of the trial world championship and the enduro world championship.”, the pilot concludes with resignation. The Catalan suffered the injury during the Italian Enduro GP, when she hit a rock with her right foot and shattered her thumb.

The result was a double open fracture for which she underwent surgery in Italy on the same day of the accident. Subsequently, she was transferred to Barcelona where she remained hospitalized for several days at the Quirón Hospital. After an initial period of observation, the doctors detected several necrotic areas that were removed. Laia Sanz will try to make a comeback in the third and final round of the European Women’s Trial Championship, which will be held on September 8 in the Netherlands.
