In a speciality where statistics are not very important and it is difficult to take the top positions, Matteo Grattarola has carved out a niche for himself in the history of trial.
The Italian rider, born in 1988, won the first day of competition at the Italian Trial GP, ahead of Toni Bou and Adam Raga. This victory broke a streak that had been going on for 28 years. Since then, an Italian rider has not climbed to the top of the podium of the TrialGP World Championship; at that time it was the late Diego Bosis.
Matteo Grattarola won the Trial2 World Championship in 2020, having decided to step down from TrialGP in 2018 temporarily (he had been in the top flight since 2010). Time proved the Italian rider right, and since then he has staged a dazzling rise in level, even finishing in the fifth position overall in 2021 and in 2022 surprise with up to five podiums, including the aforementioned victory, finishing fourth in the overall standings of the 2022 TrialGP World Championship.
This progression shows that Matteo Grattarola is ready to star in a 2023 season where he can be one of the great candidates to fight for victory regularly and, why not, opt for the world title.
