Amós Bilbao wins the Two Days of Classic Trials in Maeztu

Bilbao Maeztuveteran Cantabrian rider has claimed victory in the first edition of the Two Days of Trial Classics of Maeztu that have been held this weekend in the town of Alava.

Amós Bilbao (Montesa) has lifted the trophy and has placed the txapela of champion -typical of the Basque Country- by finally winning the Two Days of Trial of Classics of Maeztu, which have concluded today Sunday after a splendid weekend, where The weather has helped the almost 90 participants in the event to enjoy a high-level competition.

The route, of just over 20 kilometers in which there were 20 zones, was praised by all the participants, with variety of areas and very suitable for the bikes entered in the race and also for its beauty, as it ran along tracks and trails between Maeztu and neighboring Sabando.

Bilbao has been able to recover the small difference in points that yesterday was taken by Diego Urreta (Fantic), provisional leader of the race at the beginning of the day and the Catalan Jordi Tarrés (Beta).

Nerves betrayed Urreta, who scored two points in the early sections of the morning and although he held back for the rest of the day, he finished with more points than Bilbao. The seven-time Trial World Champion, Jordi Tarrés also made mistakes, one of them, in the penultimate section, which dropped him one position on the final podium, being third.

In the rest of the categories, maximum equality in the ‘Greens’ class between Javier Aldecoa (Bultaco) from Álava has won, by a small margin of difference, the Biscayans Íñigo Ucelay (Montesa) and Juan Carlos Maurer (Montesa).

In ‘Yellows’, the final podium was formed by the Catalans Josep Soldevila (Bultaco), Agustí Vila (Bultaco) and Víctor Martín (Bultaco). This category, with 46 participants, was the largest of the three.

Amós Bilbao: “When I decided to run this race, the first goal was to enjoy the trial, and I have achieved it. And the second, to win it, and despite yesterday’s mechanical problem, I finally managed it too. I am, logically, very happy, because I loved this trial; There is a very good atmosphere and the route is beautiful with nice areas, smooth driving. Of course, it’s lucky that it didn’t rain, because it would have been something very different.”

Jordi Tarrés: “I finished very happy and because everything went very well. The important thing was to have fun and enjoy the trial, because it was very nice, a route on which we felt very comfortable. It hasn’t been easy to ride a bike like this Beta again, so different from modern ones; Sometimes you want to demand more, but… I repeat that the important thing was to enjoy everything, since the Moto Club takes care of the details and I think that this race has a great future: because of the areas, because of the route and because of the desire to do well that the organization has”.

Diego Urreta: “Yesterday I was happier than castanets, finishing ahead of two legends like Tarrés and Bilbao, something I didn’t expect. I was very relaxed and things started to work out. Today maybe I started a bit nervous, but little by little I got into a rhythm in a trial with some more difficult areas than yesterday. Even though I didn’t win, I’m just as happy as if I had. It’s been fantastic.”
